Marković: More efficient work of prosecutors in domestic violence cases and better protection of victims

In the past year, a completely new, direct model of prosecutorial action has been introduced into the work of state prosecutors in cases of domestic violence or violence within a family community, ensuring a comprehensive institutional response. This model has contributed to higher-quality evidence collection, better protection of victims, and faster decision-making. Prosecutors now propose protective measures more efficiently, and practice has shown a significantly greater institutional sensitivity toward victims.

This was highlighted by the Supreme State Prosecutor, Milorad Marković, at the conference “A Conversation on Gender Equality – A Responsibility We All Share”, organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), noting that this approach has strengthened the role of the prosecution service as a key bearer of the institutional response to domestic violence, with an emphasis on prevention and the protection of human dignity.

“A systemic approach is of crucial importance in the process of building a society that does not tolerate violence, where the criminal-law response to violence will be a measure of last resort, and prevention and the promotion of moral values and human dignity will be the predominant approach to action,” the Supreme State Prosecutor emphasized.

The Supreme State Prosecutor’s Office encourages all persons who suffer any form of violence to contact the competent prosecutor’s office or the police. The prosecution service is fully prepared to provide protection, undertake urgent measures, and ensure that every victim is heard, protected, and supported throughout the entire procedure, while perpetrators of criminal offences are adequately sanctioned.. Tužilaštvo je potpuno spremno da pruži zaštitu, preduzme hitne mjere i obezbijedi da svaka žrtva bude saslušana, zaštićena i praćena tokom čitavog postupka, a učinioci krivičnog djela budu adekvatno sankcionisani.

Marković stated that all institutions within the system must continuously improve their operations. He added that, for the State Prosecutor’s Office, the priority in the coming year will be the more consistent application of established standards and improved conditions for the support and protection of victims, along with further strengthening awareness of gender equality within the institution itself.
